900 Origami Peace Cranes Project

900 origami peace cranes is a novel art project to celebrate Rutherglen 900. The project has been developed by the Rotary Club of Rutherglen along with the women from the Nurture Educational and Multi-cultural Centre in Cambuslang. The group are creating 900 origami peace cranes which represent peace, hope, harmony, community and future happiness.

Rotary President, Dr. Janice Ross, who is leading on the project as an origami teacher said:

The project is intended to reflect Rutherglen’s ability to provide home and shelter for people through the centuries. Many years ago, Robert the Bruce ordered that welcome should be given to incomers from the Highlands. In later years, people came from Ireland, Flanders, the Indian sub-continent, Ukraine, Turkey, Nigeria and elsewhere. Most of the women attending the Multi-Cultural Centre are professional women escaping persecution in Turkey.

Councillor Robert Brown, Chair of Rutherglen 900, visited the project to see it for himself. Robert said:

The origami peace cranes project is very impressive in linking the celebration of the 900th anniversary of the Royal Burgh of Rutherglen to an artistic venture demonstrating an important aspect of our history and our modern-day society. It was great to meet the women and hear some of their inspiring stories.

The project will feature the 900 birds using umbrellas as objects of shelter and fairy lights. Watch out for this beautiful origami display going on display in a Rutherglen venue in 2026.
