Q: What is Rutherglen 900: Striding the Streets?

A: It is a community parade created for Rutherglen’s 900th anniversary, featuring local schools, community groups, artists, musicians and R900 mascot Dougie the Pigeon, culminating in a free event at Overtoun Park.

A: The event is on Saturday 13 June 2026.

A: The parade sets off at 2:00pm and is expected to reach Overtoun Park and finish at around 3:00pm.

A: The route goes along Fernhill Road, onto Willow Boulevard (A730), along Blairbeth Road, Broomieknowe Road and Roger Drive, before entering Overtoun Park at the corner of Roger Drive and Mill Street. Please refer to our parade spectator maps for further info.

A: The parade is designed for residents and audiences to watch from windows, doorsteps and the pavement along the route, especially around Blairbeth Road, Broomieknowe Road and Roger Drive as the parade approaches Overtoun Park. Please refer to our parade spectator maps for further info.

A: No. All participants are pre-registered community groups, schools and artists, and for safety audiences are asked not to follow behind the parade or step into the road. Please enjoy the parade from the pavement and designated viewing points instead.

A: There will be temporary traffic management and a police escort on parts of the route, but the parade keeps moving and disruption is expected to be short and low-risk.

A: Yes, audiences are encouraged to use pavements and local viewing points along the route; the route uses standard public streets with dropped kerbs, and the end point is Overtoun Park, which has park paths and accessible entrances.

A: Toilets, including accessible toilets, are available after the parade at Overtoun park as designated event Portaloos, an accessible toilet at Grow 73 and in Overtoun Bowling Club which includes an accessible ramp.

A: The parade can go ahead in light rain. In heavy rain, hail or high winds the event team may adapt or cancel the outdoor parade and redirect activity to indoor partner venues if needed, with updates shared via Rutherglen 900 communications.

A: Yes, the event is designed as a family-friendly daytime parade and park celebration, with school groups, choirs and family activities at Overtoun Park.

A: We ask owners to always keep dogs on leads to ensure the safety of participants, audiences and other animals at the event. We ask strictly that you do not approach a horse with a dog at any time.

A: From around 3:00pm to 5:00pm there is a free “Party in the Park” with live music, dance, walkabout performances, workshops, family activities, food vendors and community stalls.

A: The park event starts as the parade arrives at approximately 3:00pm and runs until 5:00pm.

A: The event is free and unticketed; everyone is welcome to drop in and enjoy the programme during the afternoon.

A: Highlights include Oi Musica, the Rutherglen 900 Schools Choir, Vince Virr dance performance, a dance performance by Aishwarya Patil, Dougie the Pigeon, headline sets from Siobhan Miller, Cambuslang and Rutherglen Rock and Pop Community Chorus and Kings Park Brass Band, plus roaming performances, family workshops and stalls.

A: Yes, audiences will have the opportunity to meet Clydesdale horses with supervised handlers, take photos with them and ask questions. We ask audiences to maintain a safe distance, do not feed and exercise caution when around the animals. Strictly we ask that ALL DOGS are kept on leads. To ensure the safety of everyone and your pet, please avoid the horses when walking a dog.

A: Yes, food vendors such as Screaming Peacock, Mr Whippy and Really Awesome Coffee will be on site, and Overtoun Bowling Club will be open to audiences. Picnics are also welcome on the lawn and at neighbouring venue Grow 73. Whilst Vegan and Vegetarian options will be available, we ask that you bring picnic options to accommodate any specific preferences or allergies. Please keep the park tidy at all times and use the bins provided.

A: You can enter Overtoun Park via the usual park entrances at Roger Drive, Mill Street and Overtoun Drive, all of which will be open and stewarded, while being kept clear for emergency access.

A: On-site parking inside the park is restricted to event and emergency vehicles only; members of the public should use surrounding on-street parking at their own risk or walk/use public transport where possible. 

A: There are accessible toilets at Overtoun Bowling Club and Grow 73, step-free park entrances, and a BSL interpreter stationed at Overtoun Park during the main event period to support D/deaf audiences. Please contact us regarding accessibility at [email protected]

A: Although we do not have a designated platform, the main stage audience area is on level grass adjacent to park paths, with steward support available to help audiences find a suitable spot; the team will aim to keep clear sightlines and pathways so wheelchair users and people with limited mobility can access the performance area comfortably. A: The event is designed to be a standing event, with limited seating around the park for food vendor areas, park benches and workshop activities. Should you require seating for access reasons please contact our team in advance.

A: The event is designed to be alcohol free, therefore on-site vendors will sell food, hot and soft drinks only.

A: As this is an outdoor daytime event, audiences are encouraged to dress for the Scottish weather with layers, waterproofs and sturdy footwear; on sunny days, hats, sunscreen and water are recommended.

A: Event Management, security and police may pause or stop performances for safety reasons, communicating via announcements and stewards; in the case of severe weather or serious incidents the park space may be cleared and audiences guided to leave safely, with updates provided via on-site announcements and Rutherglen 900 channels.

A: Updates will be posted on official Rutherglen 900 channels (website and social media) and through signage and steward briefings on the day, including any changes to timings, locations or weather-related plans.
